Computer Use Policy

The McComb Public Library’s computers access the Internet which is a global entity with a highly diverse user population. Library patrons access the internet at their own risk.   As with other library materials, it is the patron or the parent/legal guardian of minor children, who assumes the responsibility for supervising access to the Internet resources in the library.

The computers are available to school age children and adults; however parents must sign a permission form allowing their child to use the library computers. Permission forms must be signed at the circulation desk and are not available to be taken out of the building.

This is required if the child is under 18 years of age.   Library staff cannot provide in-depth instruction on the use of computers.

The computers are available, subject to periodic maintenance, during regular library hours. Use is on a first come first served basis. Patrons are checked in for a 1 hour time frame but may extend their time if there is no waiting list for library computers.

No food or drink at or around any computer workstation.

Computer #3 may be used for a 1 hour session and time may only be extended for testing, tutoring, or other situations at the discretion of the library staff.

Patron computers will be shut down 15 minutes prior to library closing and patrons should finish all sessions at that time. Reminder messages will be sent to patrons at 45 minutes and 15 minutes.  Staff will end patron computer sessions if needed.

Computers may be reserved 24 hours in advance.   Computer users should have a library card or a valid driver’s license or ID to use library computers.

The library’s computers may be used for educational, informational and recreational purposes. The library’s computers may not be used for unauthorized, illegal, or unethical purposes. You may not send, receive or display text or graphics which may be construed as obscene as defined in Ohio Revised Code 2907.01.

Users are expected to respect the privacy of others by not misrepresenting yourself as another user; by not attempting to modify or gain access to files, passwords, or data belonging to others; by not seeking unauthorized access to any computer system, or damaging or altering software components of any network or database.

The McComb Public Library is not responsible for damage to a patron’s flash drive for any loss of data, damage or liability that may occur from patron use of the library’s computers.

Misuse of the library’s computers or Internet access will result in loss of Internet privileges, and could lead to loss of all library privileges.

It is understood by users of the library’s computers and the Internet that most of the information available is not generated by the McComb Public Library or by OPLIN. The library, through OPLIN, provides access to reference databases of general and special periodicals, reader advisory services, homework centers to assist students with research assignments, and legislative, historical, and archival materials and information.

Information available through OPLIN and the Internet is not warranted by the McComb Public Library or OPLIN to be accurate, authoritative, factual, or complete. The availability of networked information via the McComb Public Library does not constitute any endorsement or ratification of that information. The McComb Public Library and OPLIN are not responsible for the content of networked information available. The use of OPLIN and the Internet to engage in any activity, which constitutes violation of local, state, and/or federal laws, is strictly prohibited. All users of this service are to hold the McComb Public Library and OPLIN harmless for any and all claims, losses, damages, obligations, or liabilities directly or indirectly relating to the use of OPLIN and the Internet, causes thereby or arising there from.

In no event shall the McComb Public Library or OPLIN have any liability to any third party, even if the McComb Public Library or OPLIN is advised of the possibility of such damages.
